Destination information

This is a country where you can combine any number of different experiences, or simply pick 1 or 2 to enjoy in a more relaxed way. If you are interested in culture, there are temples, palaces and museums galore to visit. Of course, the food is all part of a country's culture, and a taste of Thailand's light, spicy cuisine from one of the bustling night markets is a real highlight. Bangkok isn't just for culture vultures - you can go bargain hunting in the shops and markets, and explore the many funky bars and clubs. The country's beautiful scenery gives you plenty of chance to enjoy active pursuits such as walking and diving, and the wildlife adds even more colour to the landscape. Children can join in the fun on rafting trips and feeding elephants. Meanwhile, couples can enjoy island life by day and by night. Beaches are not only perfect spots for unwinding, but they also become party venues when there's a full moon.

Bangkok has always been a city of cultural diversity, and that has long been reflected through a wide range of performing arts and entertainment, from the traditional 'Khon' (classical masked dance) and 'Likay' (Thai folk dance), to the glitz and glam of world-famous ladyboy shows - and even international Broadway productions. Bangkok has also played host to many big names in the entertainment business; the likes of concert pianists and prima ballerinas, soulful tenors and soprano divas.

lb1 Thailand's katoeys are some of the most beautiful - and convincing - transvestites in the world, mostly accepted and embraced by a highly tolerant Thai society. Some families even believe that katoeys bring good luck to them, an enlightened attitude that was boosted by several Thai movies in the past two decades dedicated to katoey themes. 'Beautiful Boxer', for example, tells the true story of a Thai kickboxing champion who became a woman, adored by fans and feared by rivals. Gender reassignment surgery in Thailand is also legendary - not only for the outstanding surgical standards that are maintained, but also because it is one of the most cost-effective places in the world to have it done. But, back to the ladyboy shows. Most of the performers have had breast implant surgery, and are saving for the 'final curtain' on their manhood. Some shows won't allow them to perform after they've become women, as they won't technically be ladyboys anymore. This rule, however, is not strictly enforced - especially if a performer is a hot favourite with the audience. As a result, Bangkok boasts some of the most famous and fabulous ladyboy shows in the world. These cabaret-like shows pay tribute to the creme de la creme of the female persona; from Hollywood glam and disco diva to mythical creatures and legends of the Orient, in shows that feature spectacular extravaganza-type sets and costumes. To add some fun, comedy skits are normally thrown in too. These fascinating and highly artistic performers captivate audiences with their charm, unique creativity and flawless female impersonations. A ladyboy show promises an evening of polished and most enjoyable entertainment for the whole family.

How to tell
Often, it is impossible to tell. Their petite Asian frames (by Western standards), flawless skins and exotic features make many Thai men good candidates for successful gender reassignment surgery. That's if they wanted to. Advanced plastic surgery techniques and other medical developments can also eliminate all obvious signs of masculinity, and many katoeys are very natural - and even more beautiful than their (real) female counterparts. A favourite contestant for the Miss Thailand title was once disqualified in the final round of judging, but only after her katoey status was leaked to the local media by a jealous rival. However, many theories exist about identifying a katoey; some even bordering on the ridiculous. The only way to tell is to look out for physical signs like big shoulders, hands and feet, and in some cases height. Thai men are often taller than women. Another way to tell is from behavioral patterns. Too much make-up maybe, extravagant clothing, overtly dramatised gestures and just a bit too much of a sway in the hips when she struts down the street. And, of course, a deep or husky voice. But remember, katoeys deserve to be treated with respect, since the courage it takes to live out who they want to be is nothing short of admirable.

SOI COWBOY                                                                 soi cowboy Soi Cowboy was named after the cowboy hat-wearing African-American who opened the first bar here in the early 1970s, this red-light district has a more laid-back, carnival-like feel to it than Patpong or Nana Plaza. Flashing neon lights up a colourful streetscape comprised mainly of middle-aged expats, Japanese and western tourists, and of course a lot of sexily dressed girls. With cries of 'helloooa, welcome!' the latter try to lure you into one of the 20 or so A go-go bars that line its sides... don't be shy, it's pretty easy going and open-minded. Remember: you might not see this again anywhere else in the world!

Each is brightly lit and colourful, playing loud music, offering lines of seats typically arranged in tiers around a UV-lit central stage. If you like to be close to the action, another row of stools is available directly around the stage... first timers tend to sit in the back. The girls sway and shimmy, wearing little more than a tiny skirt and a bra... sometimes even less. It seems that the later you come, the less they'll wear. Girls rotate from pole to pole until a full round has been completed, or until a show starts.

Soi Cowboy is fairly straight forward, no traps or scams... so just sit and order a drink: expect to pay 100 to 150 baht, which is rather fair. A girl (or two) might sit next to you and ask for a drink, but never in a pushy way. If you want to enjoy your new friend's company, it's a nice gesture to buy her one and it is not too crazily expensive. Don't hesitate to offer another if you are having a good time, and you will feel good about yourself too. If you chose to sit next to the stage, you are welcome to tip the dancing girls if you feel like... and you will certainly get a bit more attention.

Gazebo Khao San Road
                                     gazbar

Gazebo is a rooftop bar-cum-club where balmy winds and nocturnal city views mix into a heady cocktail. It's all a little like the entrance to a half-built pleasure palace. Resist the temptation to turn back; views entertain while you sip cocktails in what feels like an upscale Moroccan loft. The plump cushions, the soft lamps, the shisha pipes (and the lack of air-conditioning…) are all heavily redolent of Cairo. Includes ‘The Zed Bar’ – a state-of-the-art DJ room where you can belly dance into the small hours.

A sultry evening breeze heightens the Arabian Night's feel, while the live reggae band adds to the eclecticism. Then, once the cocktails have kicked in and your eyes glazed over, head next door to meet Gazebo's raucous alter ego: a small, dark club room thick with 3am nocturnes and loud dance beats. Entry is 300 baht after midnight.

Opening Hours: 18:00 - late Location: Khao San Tel: +66 (0)2 629 0705 Dress Code: Smart Casual How to get there: If you are at the police station on Jakrapong Road in front of Khao San, keep walking toward Ratchadamnoen Road, Gazebo is on your left. Gazebo Khao San is highly rated as one of the Great Bars of the World in Singha-Lonely Planet 2009.

Sky Bar LeBua at State Tower - Riverside
Enjoy sweeping views from the top of Bangkok's second tallest building, the landmark State Tower with its highly visible golden dome. Tucked away in a corner of the award-winning open air Sirocco restaurant on the 64th floor, Sky Bar's counter is magically illuminated and changes colour every few minutes.

A favourite hang-out for celebrities and wannabes, this is where you'd find some of the best live jazz in Bangkok. Also located at the Dome is Distil, another place where everyone likes to be seen. Part DJ bar, part smoking lounge and part restaurant, Distil serves fine single-malt Scotches like Macallan and Glenmoranghie, accompanied by a small carafe of genuine Scottish water.

The oyster bar features fresh, imported oysters, as well as Iranian caviar. If you feel like puffing on a fine Cuban cigar, choose one from the humidor and light up on Bangkok's highest smoking balcony, overlooking the Chao Praya River. Drinks and food might be pricey, but the experience is priceless. Reservations are required for Sirocco.

Opening Hours: 17:00 - 01:00 Location: Lebua at State Tower (Silon/Riverside) Tel: +66 (0)2 624 9999 Dress Code: Smart Casual (no beach shorts or flip-flops allowed)

Getting Around The BTS Skytrain is the safest, most comfortable and convenient way to get around Bangkok. In service since December 5, 1999, it has transformed the face of public transportation in the Thai capital, for the first time offering both residents and visitors a comfortable ride through central Bangkok - lifting commuters above the chronic congestion, noise and pollution of the streets below.

Our modern electrified trains transport Bangkok's commuters in wide air-conditioned cars, saving them time with quick, reliable service. The BTS SkyTrain's high-capacity operating system ensures almost no breakdowns and a virtual 100% punctuality. Each train can carry over 1,000 passengers while a similar number of people would use 800 cars, making the BTS Skytrain the most environmentally friendly mass transit system in Thailand. Currently there are two routes, the Sukhumvit Line and the Silom Line. They cover much of the central city and its many commercial, residential and tourist areas, with extensions planned to outlying areas. The trains run daily between 6:00 am and 12:00 midnight with frequent service throughout the day, increased during rush hours. The fare is based on the distance traveled.
